Medical Massage – Asheville

What is Medical Massage?

Medical Massage is result oriented and the treatment is specifically directed to resolve conditions that have been diagnosed and prescribed by a Physician. The therapist may use a variety of modalities or procedures during the treatment, but will focus the Medical Massage treatment only on the areas that are specific to the doctor’s prescription.

Medical Massage is very effective in treating many conditions. Here is an example of some conditions that clients have had results from:

  • Low Back and Neck Pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Rhematoid and Osteoarthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Carpal Tunnel
  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

I also offer the more traditional, wellness massage of Swedish, Deep Tissue, Trigger Point, Hot Stone and Cupping therapies.

If you have been injured in a car accident or on the job, or if you have another injury or condition for which medical massage is necessary, your doctor may give you a prescription for massage. I work with medical doctors, naturopaths, physical therapists, chiropractors, and other health care practitioners, providing massage care when it is medically indicated for their patients.

What is the difference between medical massage and wellness massage? Medical Massage and Arthrossage (Medical Massage for Arthritis) is an outcome-based, physician-directed, and scientifically grounded healing modality. As with physical therapy sessions, medical massage sessions are prescribed by a physician for specific issues and are limited to a physician-designated course of treatment, and can be compensated through insurance*. Please note that I do offer therapeutic massage that is also outcome based, as described above (prescription not necessary).

*I do not file insurance for you. I can give you the proper documentation for your insurance provider.

Arthrossage – Medical Massage for Arthritis

Arthritis is the most common cause for disability.

Arthritis is a painful and disabling disease with many sufferers of all ages. Massage and hydrotherapy treatment can help ease the discomfort and degeneration. With a health promoting lifestyle, encouraged and assisted by massage therapy, improvement and a better quality of life can be enjoyed by those with arthritis. The limited function associated with osteo-arthritis (DJD) lends itself to successful treatment with massage therapy. People suffering with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can be helped by the skilled therapist.

A combination of eastern and western techniques, along with information given by the medical community, gives massage therapists the knowledge and ability to help with arthritis.

BENEFITS OF ARTHROSSAGE:
  • Gentle on client and the therapists
  • Targets individual sports-specific needs
  • improves overall athletic performance
  • Increases agility (flexibility, strength, balance and endurance)
  • Elongates muscle fibers to impact speed and power of motionE
  • Decreases injury and shortens recovery time
  • Works through the central nervous system affecting the whole body and producing a sense of well being

Beneficial For:

  • Rheumatoid
  • Osteo Arthritis
  • PTOA
  • Scoliosis
  • Kyphosis
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis
  • Common athletic injuries

Acid-Alkaline Imbalance in the Body

The Consequences of  Acid-Alkaline Imbalance in the Body

When it comes to health, balance is everything. The body needs t maintain a balance between two basic types of chemical compounds – acid and alkalis. This is essential for good and long term health.

The body is acidic by function. The cells and tissues require a slightly alkaline environment in order to do their job properly.  Healthy bodies maintain a narrow range of pH blood and tissue balance at all times. If our bodies stay in an acidic environment for long periods,  our health will begin to deteriorate. Scientists have identified this common, mildly acidic tilt in the body chemistry as “chronic low grade metabolic acidosis”.

The typical Western diet is acidogenic, meaning that is consists primarily of foods that have an ongoing acidifying effect on the body. The Standard American Diet fits in this category. Health experts now recognize this as one of the leading causes of our nation’s rate of chronic degenerative diseases. It is also the cause of our spike in obesity not only among adults, but our children as well.

The dietary patterns involve the over-consumption of acid forming foods. Examples of acid forming foods are coffee, sugar, proteins, alcohol, refined foods and grains. We do not eat enough of alkaline forming foods such as vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds. This imbalance creates a breeding ground for a variety of health problems. Here is a list some of the problems that people are experiencing. I will be elaborating on each of these problems in future articles.

  • Impaired Cellular Function
  • Fatigue/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Diminished Immunity
  • Inflammation
  • Osteoporosis
  • Premature Aging
  • Accelerated Muscle Loss
  • Diminished Mental Function/Clarity

It is not difficult to create a healthy diet that promotes a healthy, alkaline, internal environment. We have created these bad habits over the years, but they can easily be altered. With the right information, we can greatly improve our health. The majority of the foods we eat should be alkalizing.  We need to cut back on the amount of meat, poultry, fish and dairy we eat and replace it with larger portions of vegetables, fruit, seeds and nuts. Refined carbohydrates, refined sugars, soft drinks, and highly processed foods should be entirely avoided.

Some of us may find it hard to eat the recommended seven to eight servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Even if we are eating plenty of fruits and vegetables we still may not be getting all the vitamins and nutrients that we need. The soil that our crops grow in may be nutrient depleted.  If you are worried that you are not getting all the essential vitamins and nutrients that you need, you may want to add a supplement to your diet. You can supplement your diet with vitamins or even a powdered drink that is full of essential vitamins and minerals.
